Abstract
After two generations of mass and pedigree selection, six populations originating from crosses made between six African varieties and TX7078 were crossed in all possible combinations. Significant correlations appeared between various pairs of parameters, the largest coefficient being +0.71, between yield expressed as g/plant and the number of panicles per plant. The parent showing the best general combining ability was F3(TX7078 X Kaura), while the combinations F3(TX7078 X Kaura) X F3(TX7078 X Farafara) and F3(TX7078 X Kaura) X F3(TX7078 X Shallu) showed the best specific performance. Additive and dominance effects were of comparable importance in controlling yield and yield components, indicating that further improvement should be obtainable through selection.
