Abstract

Highly significant differences occurred among 30 varieties, grouped into local, Giza and imported varieties, and among groups for days to midblooming, plant height, stalk diameter, leaf area, tillering ability, lodging, threshing and flour extraction percentage, grain yield per plot, 100-grain weight, grain volume and specific gravity, and protein content. Positive and significant relationships occurred between grain yield and (1) leaf area, (2) plant height, (3) threshing percentage, (4) 100-grain weight and (5) grain volume, but a significant negative relationship occurred between grain yield and protein content. Egyptian varieties surpassed imported varieties in leaf area, plant height, grain yield, volume and specific gravity, and flour-extraction percentage. Imported varieties which were characterized by early maturity, stalk thickness and dwarf habit, are considered useful for hybridization with Egyptian varieties.
