Abstract

In a pot trial, sorghum cv. Texas 608 was given either (a) no fertilizer, or (b) 110 kg N/ha alone or in combination with (c) 80 kg K, (d) 34 kg P or (e) 34 kg P + 80 kg K/ha. Panicle weights were: (a) 9.5, (b) 16.3, (c) 28.8, (d) 21.3 and (e) 10 g. In a further pot trial, application of 55, 110 or 220 kg N/ha in combination with 34 kg P + 80 kg K/ha gave grain yields of 28.5, 29.3 and 35.5 g, respectively, compared with 10 g/panicle in the unfertilized control. In field trials in 1970-1, sorghum was given 0, 55, 110 or 220 kg N in combination with 34 kg P + 80 kg K/ha. In 1970, grain yields were increased from 1.91 t/ha with no N to 2.78 and 4.38 t with applications of 110 and 220 kg N, respectively. In 1971, grain yields were 2.43, 6.7 and 5.73 t/ha with 0, 110 and 220 kg N, respectively.
