Abstract

In greenhouse studies the effects of N fertilizer on growth of sorghum and S. hermonthica were investigated in relation to parasitism. N application increased growth of both infected and non-infected sorghum plants. Application of either complete nutrient or ammonium sulphate solutions to sorghum plants with split-root systems resulted in an increase in growth of the root system which received high concn of the fertilizers compared with the other half which received only water. Shoot weight increased whether fertilizer was added to one half of the root system or shared between the 2 halves, with or without infection. The number of Striga plants emerging/pot decreased with increasing rate of fertilizer, especially with early application. Measurements of the plant growth promoting substances as GA or kinetin equivalents in the xylem exudates of sorghum revealed that infection with S. hermonthica greatly decreased the concn of both growth substances but N application increased their concn whether the plant was infected or non-infected with S. hermonthica. It was concluded that N fertilizers are useful for controlling S. hermonthica
