Abstract
Simple sugars were extracted from sweet sorghum culms, variously prepared. Sonication of succulent culms suspended in water followed by centrifugation resulted in the extraction of 88% of the available sugars. Following sugar removal, the residue was extracted with a 12% NaOH sol. The cellulosic residue remaining was 98% converted to glucose by enzymatic hydrolysis. The alkali treatment extracted 90% of the pentosans in the culms, and 91% of these pentosans were precipitated from the alkaline extract with acidified ethanol. Three-quarters of the dry wt of sweet sorghum is reported to be convertible to fermentable sugars
