Abstract
In a study of heterosis over the midparental value (H) and over the better parent value (heterobeltiosis, HB) for grain yield/plant and 6 yield-related characters in 60 hybrids and 23 parents (3 male-sterile lines and 20 inbreds), 17 hybrids showed significant H and 8 significant HB for grain yield. H for height ranged from 25.28 to 80.62%, while HB ranged from 40.28 to 59.87%. Only 81A X 196 and 81A X 6 showed negative H, suggesting that in general there was little chance of breeding dwarfs from the crosses made. Negative H and HB for number of days to 50% flowering, regarded as favourable, were present in most hybrids. Early hybrids could be produced by using 5141A, 5054A and 81A as maternal parents. Most hybrids showed significant H for ear length, and 3 showed significant HB. Few hybrids showed H for ear girth. Only 5141A X 211 showed significant H for number of productive tillers. This cross also showed significant H for grain yield
