Abstract
Absence of meiotic abnormalities in the crosses S. caffrorum (male-sterile, 2n = 20) x S. halepense (2n = 20) and S. cernuum (2n = 20) x S. halepense indicated a close phylogenetic relationship of the species involved, although a lower chiasma frequency in the second cross indicated structural differentiation. A wide range of pollen and seed sterility in progenies of the second cross is attrited to a complex of factors including structural differentiation and complementary genes causing diplontic sterility and cytoplasmic-genic interaction. The persistence of complete male sterility in the crosses of S. caffrorum 6msCK60A' x S. halepense and back crosses to S. caffrorum 'CK60B' indicated that the cytoplasms of CK60B and S. halepense can be considered identical for the expression of genes inducing male sterility in CK60A, while those of S. cernuum and msCK60A were inferred to be identical. "Though S. halepense did not possess pollen fertility restoration factors, the effects of modifiers influencing such restorer genes contributed ty 5. halepense was evident.
