Abstract

Four dwarf Pennisetum purpureum genotypes and 7 tall P. purpureum X P. americanum hybrids were established in the field in June 1980 and defoliated on 15 Sep.; regrowth was sampled on 13 Oct. and at various intervals thereafter to 1 Jan. Regression analysis indicated that 2 linear lines were needed to express forage quality, with slopes generally similar in both grass types and the break occurring at about the first frost on 1 Dec. In vitro OM digestibility (IVOMD) and CP contents of leaf blades decreased in the ranges 740-570 and 140-100 g/kg, resp., in all types over the sampling period and corresponding figures for stems decreased in the ranges 720-600 and about 110-60 g/kg in dwarf genotypes and 660-450 and 70-30 g/kg in tall hybrids. Leaf blade content of dwarf genotypes decreased from about 800 g/kg in Oct. to 520 g/kg after frost and was twice as great as that of tall hybrids. Both types had high IVOMD and CP contents early and late in the growing season and then remained above 560 and 90 g/kg. The grasses offered promise for autumn and winter grazing, with the greater leaf content of dwarfs showing advantage over the tall grasses
