Abstract

The change in nitrogen status of a black soil and response of sorghum to applied nitrogen when preceded by grain cowpea, green manure cowpea, sorghum and fallowing was studied. Benefit of 45 - 60 kg N ha-1 accrued to sorghum when it followed cowpea or fallow. Nitrate content in soil was found to be higher following cowpea or fallow as compared to sorghum. No significant difference in sorghum yield was noticed when cowpea was grown either for grain or green manure
