Abstract
Grain yield and its components in four hybrids obtained by crossing the male-sterile varieties FS102 and FS112 with Sea Green and ResINRA were compared with those of the parent varieties. The greatest degree of heterosis for grain yield per ha, plants/ha and seeds per panicle, 350%, 240% and 69% respectively, was encountered in msFS112 X ResINRA, but its parent varieties were the least productive of the four and the yield of this hybrid was inferior to that of Sea Green, the best of the varieties. Only in the cross msFS102 X ResINRA did the yield approach that of the variety Sea Green. Complementation is suggested to explain the substantial heterosis observed in crosses between low-yielding varieties, involving genes with varying degrees of dominance. It was concluded that none of the parent varieties showed good combining ability
