Abstract
Analysis of data on grain yield/plant and 5 yield-related traits from a complete diallel cross involving 5 maintainers (B lines) of cytoplasmic male sterility in Pennisetum typhoides [P. americanum] revealed highly significant general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) variance and nonsignificant reciprocal differences for all traits, except total number of tillers. Nonadditive gene effects were predominant for most traits. The maintainers 81B, 5141B and 111B were good general combiners for grain yield, total and effective tiller number and ear length. The best cross combinations are indicated. The proportion of additive to total genetic variance indicated that GCA effects could result in an improvement of 31% in both total and effective tiller number, 27% in ear length and 45% in plant height
