Abstract
Results of a feeding trial and a digestion and nitrogen balance trial with lightweight grain sorghum (52 lb/bushel) indicated that it had about 95% of the value of maize for growing-finishing pigs. In another series of trials with 5 recently developed yellow endosperm grain sorghum hybrids the lysine content ranged from 0.19% (Coker 7723) to 0.23% (Coker 7675). Methionine, threonine and tryptophan contents were similar among hybrids. Results of a growing-finishing trial comparing diets containing Coker 7675 grain sorghum with maize indicated that weight gains, average daily gains, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency were similar with both diets. In another series of trials pigs given a diet of Beagle 82 triticale fortified with extra lysine and methionine ate significantly less feed than did pigs given Beagle 82 triticale fortified with soya bean oilmeal. Pigs given Beagle 82 triticale fortified with lysine performed similarly to pigs given a diet of maize and soya bean oilmeal
