Abstract
Inheritance of the diethyl sulphate - induced mutations liguleless and droopy was studied. The liguleless mutant possessed erect leaves while leaves of the droopy mutant bent downwards from the collar. The ligule and auricle were present only in the latter mutant. A single recessive gene controlled the mutant phenotype in each case. The symbols lgm and dl were proposed for liguleless and droopy, respectively. The genes were complementary with the mutant phenotype controlled by dl expressed only in the presence of the dominant allele Lgm. Considerable variation in leaf angle occurred in normal genotypes with dominant alleles of both genes. It is suggested that the effect of dl or Dl is modified by some unknown complex or the background genotype.
