Abstract
Sorghum sudanense, Pennisetum americanum cv. Gahi, Milhy and Trileaf and a Sorghum bicolor X S. sudanense hybrid were grown at 2 sites to monitor the effect of N fertilizer, seasonal growth stage and time of day on NO3 levels. Cutting height was evaluated as a method of reducing hay NO3 content. NO3 levels increased in all forages with higher N fertilizer application rates, but decreased with later maturity stages. P. americanum matured more slowly than S. sudanense under drought conditions. Time of harvesting had no effect on forage NO3 content. Lower portions of all forages contained from 2.7 to 3.5 times the upper portion NO3 content; thus raising the cutting height would reduce the forage NO3 content
