Abstract

Combining ability for five characters was studied in crosses of eleven pollinator lines with each of three male-sterile lines at two localities. General combining ability was more important than specific combining ability for plant height and number of days to flowering. Additive gene action predominated in the control of grain yield at one locality while nonadditive gene action was more important at the second locality. Differences between environments were also detected in the genetic control of 1000-grain weight. Number of grains per panicle was mainly controlled by nonadditive gene action.
