Abstract

Mature spikelets of E. turnerana were studied by means of scanning electron, fluorescence and brightfield microscopy to delineate anatomical features and localize storage components in the seed. The pericarp was a thin 2-cell layered structure and contained anisotrophic substances in cell walls. The cuticle was localized beneath the pericarp and in the mature caryopsis the seed coat had been completely obliterated. The aleurone was a layer of thick-walled cells. Beneath the embryo were large aleurone transfer cells and a pigment strand. Embryo morphology was typical of cereal seeds. The scutellum, coleorhiza and coleoptile contained protein bodies, carbohydrates and small vacuoles. The starchy endosperm contained nearly spherical starch granules, lipids and protein bodies
