Abstract
Two haploid (n = 10) plants of the variety Tx403 were pollinated with normal diploids of the same variety. In the resulting progeny, 72 plants were diploids with regular meiosis and the remaining plants had atypical chromosome numbers. Two plants (3-45 and 6-77) in the latter category possessed a chromosome number of 2n = 21. They did not differ morphologically from the diploids in the same progeny. Detailed meiotic studies were carried out with 3-45 and 6-77. In 3-45, the extra chromosome formed part of a chain of five in a proportion of the cells analysed at diacinesis. This indicates that the extra chromosome is an interchange and that the plant is a tertiary trisomic. The other derivative appeared to be a primary trisomic with a translocation which involved the nucleolar chromosomes.
