Abstract
Studies of grain quality in 60 hybrids from crosses between four male-sterile lines and local or introduced varieties, and in 13 local and twelve introduced varieties, showed that the introduced varieties had the highest contents of protein and minerals. The hybrids had higher mineral, oil, crude-fibre and carbohydrate contents than the local varieties. Discriminant analysis revealed that the hybrids or composites developed from male-sterile line 3675 showed the greatest improvements in quality.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Grain quality of 60 hybrid, 13 local and 12 introduced sorghum cv. grown at Coimbatore in 1965-9 was evaluated. Introduced cv. had the highest protein and mineral contents, while local cv. had a higher protein content than the hybrids of 4 male-sterile lines. Hybrids of male-sterile lines 172 and 3675 had the highest oil content and carbohydrate content was highest in male-sterile line 2219.
