Abstract
Thanks to the high-yielding vi~ricties programme, the Indian farmers reaped a bumper liarvest in 1967.68. As is well-known, this programme is mainly confincd to areas with assured rainfall or irrigation facilities. Iiowever, with only 20 per ccnt of the lidgrains area (or 19.2 per ccnt of the net cultivated area) under irrigation and the cvcr present danger of drougllt conditions or uneven distribution of roinfall. tlic ailuation cannot be viewed with equanimity. It clearly becomes the duty of the i~gricultural scientists to investigate ways and means of increasing production from thc rainfcd or harutii areas......
