Abstract
Five forage-sorghum cultivars, two Sudan-grass cultivars and an experimental Sudan-grass strain were studied in hybrid combinations. Heterosis was exhibited by the hybrids for plant height, node number, culm diameter, leaf length and width and dry-matter yield. Increases in dry-matter yield over the parental means were up to 65% in a few hybrids. Differences between reciprocal crosses were significant for all characters except dry-matter yield. Sudan-grass x forage-sorghum hybrids were significantly superior to the hybrids of Sudan grass x Sudan grass or forage sorghum x forage sorghum in dry-matter yield. Dry matter yield was associated positively with plant height, node number, tiller number and leaf length and negatively with leaf width.
