Abstract
Treatment of seeds of six varieties with 10, 20, 30 and 40 kR gamma rays caused a general reduction in germination and survival percentages in the M1. The effects on seed and pollen fertility varied with the variety. There was a wide range of plant abnormalities, with the highest frequency in BP-53. In the M2, diverse types of chlorophyll mutations were observed, with varieties differing in their mutation types. The largest number chlorophyll mutants was found in Type 170, which also had a high frequency of chlorophyll streaks in the M1 generation. There was a low frequency of useful mutations, such as early flowering and dwarfness.
