Abstract
In their morphological behaviour, hybrids between Sorghum sudanense, S. virgatum, S. arundinaceum and S. verticilliflorum and six male-sterile lines approached the taller parents in height and exceeded the better parents in tillering capacity. The greatest increase in tiller number (185.6%) was recorded for Martin X S. verticilliflorum. Little or no heterosis over midparent and better-parent values for leaf length, leaf width and internode diameter was recorded. Heterosis for fodder yield ranged from 2.69 to 44.2% and maximum fodder (138.5 g per plant) was recorded for Texas Blackhull Kafir X S. sudanense. S. sudanense showed the best combining ability with all male-sterile lines for fodder yield.
