Abstract

An attempt was made to study the nature of gene action using two different mating designs for characters related to grain quality, panicle length and yield, in eight varieties and four male steriles of different head type and grain quality in sorghum. Both additive and non-additive gene action were important for all characters studied as revealed by combining ability analyses. Significant reciprocal effects were observed for many characters. The best general combiners were also involved in the best specific combinations, indicating that predictions of yield of hybrids based on the general combining ability effects of the parents would generally be valid. The heritability estimates for protein and lysine were 9 and 14% respectively which were similar to the heritability estimates of grain yield. Therefore, selection for grain quality does not appear to be difficult than that for grain yield. The large genotype × environment interactions could be attributed to the photoperiodic effect on the growth of sorghum. The use of diallel and line × tester mating designs in the present study has shown the value of full diallel (with reciprocals) for comprehensive genetic analysis. Nbn-allelic interactions were more prominent in the line × tester set as compared to the diallel, probably because a more balanced genetic background was available in the full diallel, than in the fine × tester, where only four females, though different in origin, in cytoplasm and similar in means, had been used. Since all the available male steriles in sorghum are closely related in origin, the need to search for new sources of cytoplasmic male sterility was emphasized.
