Abstract
Screening studies carried out in Maharashtra, India, for resistance to Sitophilus oryzae (L.) in some promising varieties of sorghum showed that the hybrids CSH-8R, CSH-1 and CSH-5 and the varieties 168 and 370 were less susceptible to attack by S. oryzae than the local varieties R-16 and 604. No significant difference in the developmental period of the pest was observed on any of the varieties. An overall higher percentage of females was observed on the majority of varieties tested, and R-16, 370 and 604 in particular favoured the development of females. Varieties 604 and 370 had the highest percentages of infested grains and showed maximum weight loss. The descending order of resistance of the varieties tested, taking into account weevil emergence, was CSH-8R>168>CSH-1>CSH-5>370>R-16>604
