Abstract
In a trial in 1970, sorghum cv. CSH-1 and CSH-2 gave grain yields of 3.84 and 4.14 t/ha under irrigated conditions and 1.96 and 1.22 t/ha under rain-fed conditions, respectively. Growth rate, LAI and NAR during the stage of maximum leaf area were similar in both cultivars, but CSH-2 had longer stems and a higher dry weight than CSH-1 at anthesis. The number of grains/panicle was greater in CSH-2 than in CSH-1, but grain weight in CSH-2 under rain-fed conditions was lower, because its grain developed later after the cessation of rains when soil moisture stress was high and temperatures low. It was considered that a higher grain number/panicle and flowering by the end of the wet season were desirable for rain-fed cultivation
