Abstract

The effect of varying the grain yield of 5 sorghum cultivars by partial or complete removal of the panicle at flowering on the rate of death of leaves and the subsequent onset of plant death under moisture stress was studied during 2 seasons. Removal of 33 or 66% of the panicle reduced grain yield/plant, the effect being greatest in cv. Alpha. The rate of death of leaves and the onset of plant death were decreased as grain yield decreased in all cultivars. Some possible reasons for this association and its implications are discussed.
