Abstract
The need for better crop varieties adapted to semiarid growing conditions has been repeatedly elaborated and eloquently argued. Plant breeders, who have to materialize this demand, are very divided on this subject. While strong opinions were expressed that crop plants can be bred for drought resistance, there are views expressed by very experienced specialists that "you can breed for drought resistance simply by selecting for low yield." There are, obviously, some strong feelings among plant breeders that the improvement of yield and drought resistance cannot be worked out simultaneously
