Abstract

A hypertriploid (2n = 22), detected in the progeny of a partially desynaptic trisomic (2n = 15), differed in morphology from its maternal trisomic sibs, but was quite similar to triploids. The microsporocytes showed mean chromosome associations of 0.1IV + 4.43III + 2.96II + 2.34I at metaphase I with a mean chiasma number of 13.4 per cell. The 20 types of chromosome configurations observed were explained by assuming that the plant was trisomic for 6 chromosomes and tetrasomic for one. The chromosome associations observed suggested the presence of displaced duplications or small interchanges within the genome of the plant. The tetrasomic chromosome mostly formed a quadrivalent which sometimes broke down to form 2II or 1III + 1I and rarely 1II + 2I or 4I. Most of the univalents arose from the trisomic chromosomes. Abnormal distribution of chromosomes at anaphase I resulted in the formation of dyads and tetrads with unequal chromosome numbers. The plant was highly sterile but set some grain upon open pollination
