Abstract
In order to study the frequency of fertility restoration, completely ♂ sterile Combine Kafir 60 (msc + sterile cytoplasm) was crossed with 104 varieties. Seed-set data on selfed F1S revealed considerable variation in fertility both within and between varieties. The average frequency of the Msc factor for all entries was 0.61 and 0.38 for complete restoration. Kafir and forage sorghums were low in restoration in comparison with other grain-sorghum types and the Sudan grasses. With varieties of recent hybrid origin, all degrees of restoration were obtained. Variations within a variety were attributed to the original parentage or mutation. This variability probably persisted because of lack of selection pressure in the presence of normal cytoplasm.
