Abstract

The hectareage, production, and the average yields of sorghum (Sorghum vulgare L.) over the last two decades are stated and are shown to be comparable for the periods 1955-59 and 1970-74. The average hectareage in sorghum during 1968-75 decreased by 7.3% over the base year of 1967-68, marked as the year of the green revolution, while the production decreased 16.9% in spite of a 1.5% increased coverage under the hybrid varieties. During the decade of the green revolution (1967-75), total production increased by 2.4% in spite of a 2% decrease in total hectareage compared to the preceding decade. This increase was mainly a result of higher national productivity and total production in 1967-68 and 1974-75. The average productivity of 500 kg/ha attained in the late fifties remained more or less the same in the sixties and decreased to around 450 kg in the early seventies. The existing varieties have potentialities for much higher yields than those presently obtained but only under proper management conditions emphasizing cultivation of high-yield varieties and expansion of irrigated cultivation
