Abstract
Of eight Pennisetum typhoides inbreds, PB607, PB609, PB77 and PB967 gave the highest yields under drought and normal conditions in pot and field tests. Numbers of grains per panicle and grain weight per panicle were reliable as selection indices under normal and drought conditions, respectively. PB607 was the most drought tolerant. Grain yield was positively correlated with osmotic pressure of the cell sap under drought and normal conditions and negatively with crude protein content in the leaves. Of four inbreds, PB607 was the most responsive to N and P fertilization
