Abstract
Two collections of local strains, comprising 313 and 272 entries, grown in 1975-76 and 1976-77, respectively, showed considerable variation in plant height at maturity, head type and exertion, grain colour and days to flowering and maturity. Analysis of the data revealed that days to flowering and to maturity were positively correlated. Plant height at maturity was associated with all other traits except head exertion. Tall strains were generally late, with small flag leaves, open heads and a long grain-filling period, while short strains were early, with large flag leaves, compact heads and short grain-filling periods. Tall strains showed a complete range of grain colours, while short strains rarely bore yellow or red grains. Tall strains had medium-sized to large grains, while short strains had medium-sized grains; yellow grains were large in comparison with those of other colours. Strains having red or yellow grains tended to be late
