Abstract

In a field trial in Bangalore in summer 1975 on sandy loam soil, soil moisture stress, consumptive use (CU) and water use efficiency (WUE) of Eleusine coracana cv. Purna and HPB7-6 was measured. CU was higher in the unstressed control (51.1 cm) than when stress was imposed at max. tillering (50.3 cm), early ear emergence (49.9 cm), flowering (46.6 cm) and grain setting (50.3 cm). Reductions of 17, 15 and 16% in WUE were observed with stress at early ear emergence, flowering and grain setting stages, resp. Moisture depletion from the top 30 cm of soil was double (54%) the amount extracted either from 30-60 cm (27%) or 60-90 cm (20%) layer. Purna had higher WUE (67 kg/ha cm) than HPB7-6 (60 kg/ha cm) but CU differed little between cv.
