Abstract

Selection indices for yield in Eleusine coracana were evaluated using 72 lines grown in a small-plot basic trial and a yield, test trial. Two groups of indices were evaluated: group I consisted of indices constructed from 1-9 traits, trait 9, yield, only being included in the 9-trait index; group II consisted of indices constructed from the same 9 traits but with yield included in every index. The efficiency of the indices was predicted using basic-trial data and tested through rank correlation between index scores and test-trial yields. Efficiency of indices over direct selection in terms of predicted genetic advance ranged from 93.8 to 118.3%, but in terms of rank correlation it ranged from 61.4 to 95%. There was no significant difference between test-trial yields of index-selected and directly selected lines
