Abstract

In field trials in the kharif [monsoon] seasons of 1974-5, combinations of Eleusine coracana with soyabeans, cowpeas, pigeonpeas and Lablab purpureus grown in different planting patterns were assessed. In pure stands, E. coracana yield was greatest when grown in uniform rows 30 cm apart, while with clustered rows the yield was progressively reduced with increase in the vacant space between the row clusters. When grown with intercrops, E. coracana yield appeared to be more influenced by sowing pattern than the presence of the legume crop. In any given pattern, E. coracana yield was reduced most with L. purpureus and least with soyabeans. The legumes generally gave low yields. Intercropping with soyabeans or cowpeas provided economic returns similar to those of E. coracana grown alone in a uniform stand
