Abstract
Path analysis was undertaken to assess the component characters of grain yield in 14 promising selections derived from exotic × Indian crosses alongwith four checks in sorghum. Number of grains per panicle and 100 grain weight were major components of grain yield as indicated by their large positive direct effect on yield. However, number of primary and secondary branches indirectly contributed to yield via number of grains per panicle. The selection indicies constructed to determine the efficacy of such selection over straight selection for grain yield, showed that none of the selection indicies increased the efficiency of selection
