Abstract
A five parent complete diallel involving two exotic dwarfs, two induced dwarfs and one local tall was analysed for the nature of gene action and combining ability for grain yield and its components. The study revealed that over-dominance was the type of gene action for grain yield in the material studied. One exotic × Indian cross viz., IS 2226 × Karad local, exhibited maximum heterosis for grain yield and this was due to additive × additive type of interaction. Wide genetic differences were noticed among the parents for the characters studied. Heterosis appeared to be associated with geographical divergence. GCA and SCA variances indicated that both additive and non-additive gene action governed the characters. However, the non-additive part was far in excess of the additive part
