Abstract
A diallel cross among seven long panicled (early, dwarf) parents and a fractional diallel set among these seven and three additional parents with s=n/2 were evaluated for two developmental, five panicle and three seed characters. Limited variation for seed and developmental characters was restricting the yield variation among long panicled parents (LP). The yield heterosis in long × long panicled (LP × LP) crosses was mainly attributed to the increased seeds per primary branch whereas in long × compact panicled (LP × CP) crosses it was due to increased number of primary branches. Estimates of variances for general combining ability as compared to those for specific combining ability, and heritability were low in LP × LP diallel crosses and were quite large in LP × CP partial diallel crosses. The superiority of the F1 means and increased additive genetic variance of LP × CP fractional diallel crosses as compared to the corresponding estimates in LP × LP diallel crosses for most of the panicle characters related to yield indicate the possibility of reinforcement of the components of long and compact panicles in the crosses involving early, tall parens like IS 10202 (Giza type), a good general combiner for yield, panicle branches and seed size. Such early talls would be useful in future yield improvement in sorghum
