Abstract

Calli were obtained from mesocotyl explants of eight varieties of pearl millet using MS medium supplemented with 2,4-D. Variable frequencies of callus initiation were observed among the varieties. Plantlets were regenerated from the calli by transferring on to the medium devoid of auxins. Incorporation of coconut milk, Kinetin, IAA or NAA did not enhance either the callus initiation or growth rate or plantlet regeneration. The eight genotypes differed among themselves in callus growth rate and frequency of shoot bud production.
