Abstract
Under the need to rescue hybrid pearl millet cultivation in India from devartrting damw by downy mildew. a mutation induction project wu stutcd in 1971 to make the commonly used male sterile parent Tilt 23A resistant to the diswne. Simultaneoudy murma of ra8istrncs from West Africa were used in crosrbreediq by which climatic adaptation and male rtsrillty had to be transferred. A number of mildew-reltant hybrids wen dsvsloprd, both from induced mutation and introduction. Ths resistant male sterile lines ware further rxaminad as to their common features md dlfferenccs from surceptible lines. A strong svtdena for nuclear-cytoplasmic interaction war obtained by biochemical and ultn#t~cturaIln vertigltbns. Indinn pearl millet production suffered a serious setback in the late sixties due to the spread of the downy mildew disease on high-yielding hybrid varieties. All pearl millet hybrids released up to 1972 had a common female parent, the cytoplasmic male sterile inbred line Tift 23A. This inbred line had been introduced from Tifton (Georgia) because of its excellent combining ability for high yield; unfortunately it also transmitted susceptibility to downy mildew, caused by Sclerosporo graminicolo (Sacc.) Schroet., a disease of no relevance in Georgia. Effective chemical control of the pathogen was not possible and there were no suitable alternative sources of cytoplasmic male sterility. Therefore, breeders undertook tile development of a resistant substitute for Tift 23A [ I]. Raaeuch supported by the IAEA under Rewuch Contract No. IOSB/SD. 119
