Abstract

The discovery of fertiliser makred the begining of the end of the theory of the law of deminishing return of soil propounded by Malthus and Ricardo. The first economist to recognize this clearly was Karl Marx, whom a letter to Friedrich Engols in 1866 stated, 'the new agricultural chemistry in Germany, especially of Liebrig and Schonmem, is more important than all the economic theroies put together"
