Abstract
The study of the effect of N-P applications on growth of millet and clover in soils of various salinity levels (Part I) led to the present work on the extent to which such treatments influence chloride and sodium absorption by these plants, as well as their phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen contents, and the properties related to the cell sap of millet. Plants grown on soil having a salinity in the range 0.5–13 mmhos/cm generally showed the following features with increase in the degree of salinity: In comparison with control plants grown on non-saline soil, millet displayed an increase in chloride, sodium, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. In clover, increased chloride, sodium and phosphorus levels and a decreased potassium content were observed. Increasing the phosphorus level in the N-P treatments applied to the soil at constant nitrogen, resulted in an increase in the phosphorus and a decrease in the chloride and sodium contents of both millet and clover. This was especially marked at the higher soil salinity levels. A decrease in the nitrogen content of millet was also observed. When the N level in the N-P treatments increased, the following results were obtained: the nitrogen, sodium and chloride contents in millet increased and the potassium content fell; the chloride content in clover increased and there were no significant changes in sodium and potassium contents in this plant. The application of N-P to the soils generally reduced the electric conductivity and the osmotic pressure of the cell sap. At high levels of phosphorus application the decrease in sugar content of the sap resulting from soil salinity was inhibited, and the organic acid content increased
