Abstract
The N response varied mainly with the genotypes used. IE 267, a short duration variety responded linearly, whereas, the responses of Purna, H 22 and Cauvery were quadratic. The other main sources of variation in the N response were soil fertility and moisture availability. Of lesser consequence, were the presence of other nutrients, forms of nitrogen used and special treatments like seed hardening. Application of phosphate and to some extent potash reduced the response to nitrogen. The most effective form of nitrogen was calcium ammonium nitrate. Seed hardening increased the rate of N response
