Abstract
In pot trials on black and calcareous and non-calcareous red soils, finger millet was supplied with 0 or 35 kg P/ha which was placed on the surface or at depths of 5, 10 or 15 cm. On all 3 soils, yields of DM, paddy and straw, total P uptake, the percentage of plant P derived from fertilizer and the percentage utilization of added P were optimal when P was applied at a depth of 5 cm. Application of P increased DM, paddy and straw yields compared with the untreated control on all 3 soils
