Abstract
The results are reported of studies to examine the potential of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) as a fertilizer. The average dry wt. composition of E. crassipes plants was: ash 19.2%, C 34.9%, N 1.61%, P 0.31%, K 3.81%, Ca 1.66%, Mg 0.56%, Na 0.56%, Al 2568 ppm., Fe 2772 ppm., Mn 286 ppm., Zn 58 ppm. and Cu 9 ppm. In a glasshouse test, pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides), grown in 3 sandy soils showed a positive yield response where dried, ground E. crassipes plant material had been mixed into the soil
