Abstract
In trials in 1971-4, (a) Brassica nigra, (b) maize, (c) bulrush millet, (d) wheat, (e) lucerne and (f) Sesbania sesban were given no N or 3 rates of N ranging from 25-75 kg/ha in wheat to 160-640 kg/ha in S. sesban. Increase in N rate produced more succulent herbage in non-legumes, decreased DM content in (a), (b) and (c), and increased the N content in these 3 species and in most samples of (e). N application increased the amount of juice and protein extracted from non-legumes. DM and protein yields were affected more by climate than by N application. The highest daily rates of DM and extractable protein production in (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) were 51.9 and 7.2, 70.0 and 1.7, 137.5 and 3.5, 98.0 and 10.9, 78.6 and 7.9, and 36.9 and 4.0 kg/ha, respectively
