Abstract
Sweet sorghum cv. Rio was grown during 1980-1 at row spacings of 30, 75 or 105 cm and densities of 8 or 16 plants/m². At both plant densities, narrow row spacing resulted in greater yields of total DM and water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) of 11.8 or 4.18 t/ha, resp., at anthesis and 18.7 or 7.21 t/ha, resp., at maturity. The increase in WSC yield was attributed to greater photosynthetic activity before anthesis, which resulted in higher WSC yield at anthesis, and the production of taller, thicker stems associated with post-anthesis WSC accumulation
