Abstract

Intercropping of black gram [Vigna mungo], green gram [V. radiata] or cowpeas in rainfed sorghum gave sorghum grain yields of 2.27, 2.07 and 2.0 t/ha and additional legume seed yields of 254, 353 and 256 kg/ha, resp., compared with 2.13 t in sorghum in pure stands. The intercrops increased the N content and uptake in sorghum grain, which were highest with V. mungo. The intercrops also increased the soil N content compared with sorghum in pure stands
