Abstract
In field trials in summer 1980 on plots on which the dominant weed was Trianthema portulacastrum, sorghum cv. USV 3 was left unweeded, hoed and hand weeded twice or each of five 2,4-D formulations was applied with or without hand weeding 40 days after emergence. Grain yield was 0.24 t/ha without weeding and highest at 2.01 t/ha with 2,4-D ethyl ester (4% granules) at 0.8 kg a.i./ha. Av. yields with the 2,4-D treatments without and with hand weeding were 0.95 and 1.69 t/ha, resp. In similar trials in the rabi [winter] season using cv. Co.24, grain yield was highest at 1.7 t/ha with 3 l a.i. 2,4-D ester (34% EC)/ha applied pre-em. 7 days after sowing and 1 hand weeding, compared with 0.33 and 1.03 t/ha with no weeding and hoeing and hand weeding twice, resp. Other treatments gave intermediate results. In both seasons the treatments which gave the highest yields also gave the lowest number and weight of weeds/m²
