Abstract
Of 52 selections from 7 crosses advanced to the F3, the F3 of NCL3 X CSV5, CSV4 X IS2123 and CSV5 X IS4533 showed significant variability for resistance to Atherigona soccata even when incidence of the shootfly was high on day 28 after germination (dead-heart measurements were made on days 14, 21 and 28). Narrow-sense heritability estimates for dead-heart counts were 14.07% on day 14, 52.07% on day 21 and 76.31% on day 28. When shootfly incidence was high, F3 resistance values equal to the midparental values were obtained. It is suggested that selection for shootfly resistance could be made from the progenies of the 3 crosses
